Forty-five Graduate from the 2022-2023 Class of Leadership Texarkana

natalie copeland and dalton crabtree were among the graduates of the lT class of 2022-23

Forty-five Texarkana area residents completing the year-long Leadership Texarkana community leadership program were honored by the Leadership Texarkana (LT) organization at the End of Year Celebration after hours on May 2 at the Arkansas Convention Center. The Sponsoring Partner for the event was State Bank.

Through their involvement in Leadership Texarkana sessions this past year, the participants in the program were given frameworks for understanding the leadership required to lead in our community, as well as the challenges and opportunities in the greater Texarkana area surrounding economic development, healthcare, government and courts, quality of life initiatives, public and higher education, media, and the private public and non-profit sectors.  They were also challenged to develop and articulate their individual personal plans for taking active service and leadership roles in the community, and to be active agents for bringing together natural partners in working together for progress in Texarkana.  Class members were also charged with providing content for the organization’s weekly blasts of “What’s To Love Txk!,” knowing that this knowledge drives community pride and community narrative, which are foundational to our pursuit of community excellence.

As importantly, during each monthly session of the year, members of the LT Class of 2023 were also challenged through Strategic Doing-focused groups to lead the way as change agents, in maximizing our ecosystem's capacity to attract, retain and unleash the talent foundational for excellence. By doing so, class members were also learning the basics of the powerful and proven Strategic Doing processes for gathering groups to work together for progress in a region like ours, in which multiple entities are needed for effecting change–a skill Leadership Texarkana believes is the single most important leadership capacity for a community leader in Texarkana, and one which is a foundational priority for ecosystem transformation.

Each Strategic Doing group was challenged to focus one or another of the priorities needed for ecosystem transformation: That framework of priorities is focused on the foundational imperative of any ecosystem to have brainpower in order to excel (education), with that brainpower subsequently generating innovation, entrepreneurship and new value for the ecosystem.  Because the people who yield brainpower and new value can go or live anywhere they wish, two additional priorities are ensuring the presence of quality places that can connect and attract them ("sticky") as well as having a positive narrative of pride and vision that is appealing and speaks to those that bring brainpower and new value.  This priority of compelling community narrative is one of the main drivers of Leadership Texarkana's goTXK initiative.

Specifically, the initiatives the LT Class Strategic Doing teams pursued included:

•   Beautification projects downtown to enhance and foster quality places that are attractive.

•   goTXK content developed to bust the myth that there is little for kids to do in Texarkana USA

•  In the spirit of attracting and retaining talent in Texarkana, creating goTXK content specifically designed to attract young professionals to Texarkana as well as to engage them in all Texarkana has to offer.

•   Laying the foundation for a pipeline of teen content in the goTXK resources, for engaging that demographic community-wide.

•   Increasing the visibility and awareness of goTXK.org as a portal to the community calendar and to

all of the content for discovering the assets of Texarkana's community of excellence and superlatives.

•   Developing rack cards for the airport, hotels and other hospitality outlets to encourage visitors to easily find things to do and Texarkana assets through the calendar and attractions information on the goTXK site.

•  Means to celebrate youth who choose to stay in Texarkana and sign on to employment with local employers, retaining the workforce talent that we have; specifically partnering with Ledwell in a celebration of local signings.

The majority of the teams launched and working are being continued in some form beyond the class year, with ongoing impact.

Leadership Texarkana Executive Director Ruth Ellen Whitt says, "Every year, we have the privilege of working closely with another new and outstanding group of individuals who commit the time and effort to participate because they want to make a difference, who see the opportunities for making our community ever better. They leave knowing that Texarkana USA is indeed the community of excellence which we say it is, with citizens committed to working together for the excellence we all desire. Their leadership journeys are their own from the beginning; they make of the LT experience what they desire and we see so much impact coming from this group.  Given their current status and their statements of leadership intent going forward, we are excited for each of them and for all of Texarkana."
