Ashley Henderson

age: 40 | Owner | Ashley’s Care & House Call

Amanda Ables.JPG

Increasing the quality of life for the elderly and disabled is Ashley Henderson’s goal in life.  As the owner of  Ashley’s Care & House Call, she helps families find competent, honest, and reliable caretakers who provide compassionate care and comfort to those in need, without worries.  “People who are elderly or disabled deserve someone with a big heart, a great sense of humor, and an honest approach to helping them with their needs,” she says.  “I want them to feel as independent as possible and help take the burdens from their family members.”

Early on, Ashley raised her children to care for all people.  She taught them to have a big heart, follow Jesus, and always do what is right, even when no one is watching.  She admits that her greatest personal achievement is teaching them to spread love, be compassionate, and treat people with dignity and respect.

A certified CNA, Ashley has received many certifications, including specialty subjects like gerontology, plebotomy, dysphagia, and end of life care.  “When people see my face, I want them to know that I am here to help, and everything is going to be okay!” she admits.  Married to Clayton Craig, the couple has a total of six children and four grandchildren.

A nonprofit organization that is near and dear to Ashley is the David Randall Foundation Texarkana (www.davidrandallfoundationtexarkana.org).  In memory of her uncle, this foundation provides monetary support and medical supplies or equipment free of charge to help people in need who can’t afford services.

Happy, accomplished, and owner of a much-needed business, Ashley Henderson looks forward to the future.  In 10 years, she sees herself continuing to enjoy her grandchildren and taking even more trips with her family than she does now and hopefully, for longer periods of time.

Whether sitting on a patio with her friends, snuggled on the couch with her girls, Sophie and Margaret, or watching Texas A&M football with her husband, Micah, Samantha Mitchell is in her “happy place.”  She feels lucky to have two wonderful daughters who have taught her to slow down and appreciate the small things in life.  Getting to discover the world through their eyes and witness them enjoy new experiences is a joy to Samantha.

As an escrow officer at Capital Title, Samantha helps people buy and sell real estate.  “I love getting to take the stress off of my customers, and make it an enjoyable experience for them,” Samantha explains. “I get to work with some really great professionals in our community, whom I enjoy learning from and building new relationships with.”

Samantha has 10 years of experience in the title industry in Arkansas but she has worked for Capital Title of Texas since they opened their Texarkana, Texas, office in October of 2019. “I never expected a company this size to genuinely care so much about their customers and employees,” she explains.  “Through COVID, they have proven that this is a family run company that will always put family first.  Together as a team we will keep our customers our top priority.”

In her spare time, Samantha enjoys giving back to the community.  She has been a volunteer with the Angel Fund Foundation, Inc.’s Putt for a Purpose, serves in many capacities at First United Methodist Church, and helps with Special Olympics.

“In 10 years I will have two teenage girls, so I see myself on my knees praying, a lot!” she laughs. “I know I will still be a part of the Capital Title team, but I hope to find new exciting ways to be involved in the community and to be a really cool soccer mom.”

Wes Bennett

age: 34 | Owner | Powerhaul Movers

The owner of Powerhaul Movers, Wes Bennett is committed to providing excellent customer service for those who want to make sure their belongings are protected during a move.  Whether moving furniture or personal items from home-to-home, Wes enjoys meeting his customers and helping them relocate here in Texarkana or in another town.  Wes knows that making a major move can be very stressful for his clients, so he does his best to lighten the load (literally) for those who entrust their moving needs to him and his team.

Leaving a good job that he didn’t love to begin his own business with nothing more than an idea is Wes’ greatest professional achievement.  “I received my first moving job off of a Craig’s list ad,” he recalls.  “Things just grew from there, and I have never regretted it for a second.”

Lifting weights, hunting, and spending time with his family are some of Wes’ favorite pastimes.  He admits that he is very proud of his family: wife, Kaci, and daughters, Hadley (5 years old) and Grace (1.5 years old).  They are members of Trinity Baptist Church where Wes serves as part of the security team.  Helping out those in need has been a part of Wes’ ministry of helping others as he has provided pro bono moves for people who needed some assistance at the time.

When asked where Wes sees himself in 10 years, he admits that he and his family will still reside in Texarkana but hope to expand Powerhaul Movers into other cities, as well.

As a lender at State Bank, Cody Deal helps people fulfill their dreams by providing financial services that allow them to do so.  “I love my job.  I love the people I work with,” Cody explains.

Previously, Cody coached baseball and football for Pleasant Grove High School.  As a coach at PG, his greatest professional accomplishment was winning two baseball state championships with his team.  He enjoys keeping up with his former players and even officiated the wedding of one of them last year.

Although he enjoyed the staff and players at PG, he elected to quit coaching to spend more time with his wife, Ali, and children, John Morris (9), Rosemary (7), and James (5).  “Looking back, it was God’s hand on my life because Rosemary was born with a Cleft Palate birth defect and has required 11 surgeries in her little 7-year life,” he explains.  “I also help John Morris manage his Type 1 diabetes. Seeing my kids thrive despite their setbacks ... I consider that an accomplishment as a dad. They inspire me.”

Cody currently serves as a board member of Eagle Impact, and he and Ali teach a young couples’ Sunday school class, “Anchored,” at First Baptist Church Texarkana.  He enjoys coaching youth sports teams and was “semi-relieved” when COVID-19 hit because he was coaching all three of his kids’ teams  at once.  “We, also by default, always end up helping out with newly diagnosed Type 1 diabetic families and families of newborns dealing with cleft palate diagnoses across Texarkana,” he explains.  “Being able to say, ‘We know how you feel’ is a powerful thing.  We have witnessed this.”

Ready for what the next 10 years bring, Cody looks forward to continuing to help State Bank be the best bank in Northeast Texas, and he and Ali will continue raising Godly children.  He concludes, “Life has had a lot of twists and turns for our family the past 10 years, and even in the scary times, I wouldn’t change it.”

“Arkansas High School (AHS) received the highest college readiness index of all high schools in the Texarkana Metropolitan area by US News Report 2020.  I credit the incredible staff and students for this great honor,” Michael acknowledges.  “The innovative AHS Collegiate Academy, Advanced Placement, and Concurrent credit programs provide our students with unprecedented access to college courses and the skills needed for success in a post-secondary education.”

Married to Ashlie, Michael enjoys being a father to his four children: Samuel (13), Elizabeth (12), Emma (8), and Annabelle (4).  He loves getting back to nature, whether hiking, boating, or fishing.  He also enjoys singing and playing a variety of musical instruments.  As the minister of music at First Presbyterian Church, Michael is involved with various missions and projects of the church, which benefits the entire Texarkana community.

“Weaving in community involvement to the mission and vision of AHS is very important to me,” Michael explains.  “This past year, I launched a new community service initiative that encouraged students to give back to Texarkana.  As a result, all seniors had the opportunity to volunteer at various nonprofit corporations and elementary schools throughout Texarkana.”

At Smith’s Ready Mix, Matt Smith oversees sales, quality control, management, and fleet service/maintenance.  A family-owned business, Matt has worked for his father since he was 11 years old.  “I have always enjoyed working for and learning the business from him.  We have been in business for 73 years, so carrying on our family’s business and handing it down to my kids gives me a lot of satisfaction,” he says.  “I also enjoy working with the customers, employees, and equipment that we use to produce and deliver concrete.  I take pride in the projects that we supply concrete to and love explaining to my family and friends how many loads of concrete it takes to get a bridge, warehouse, or feed mill built.”  Solving problems that come with his business and construction projects they are involved in is a challenge Matt takes on full force.  Being a part of the solution is important to him.

Helping out with his family’s business means the world to Matt.  “My Dad had open heart surgery in 2016.  My sister and I were able to keep our company going and thriving, during his absence,” he continues.  “It was gratifying to be able to take over for him and make him proud of what he’s taught me and Shana to do.”  Snagging his wife, Laura, having three healthy children (Rowdy, Ruby, and Landry), and becoming a foster parent are Matt’s greatest personal accomplishments.

Matt and his team have donated concrete to several schools and nonprofit organizations throughout the years, including Pleasant Grove baseball team, Ashdown baseball team, T.A.P.D. basketball court, Nashville football/baseball teams, Genoa FFA/Construction Program, Randy Sams’ Outreach Shelter, Texarkana Razorback Trap Shooting Team, and The Stone Foundation.  They also send a mixer truck to be used during the Junior League of Texarkana’s “Touch a Truck” event, and sponsor several baseball and softball teams.

Greg Morgan

age: 26 | Pastor | Williams Memorial United Methodist Church

Greg Morgan.JPG

“In a broad perspective, my role as a pastor is to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world by preaching and teaching the word of God,” explains Greg Morgan, pastor of Williams Memorial United Methodist Church.  “I am also called to order the business of the church, administer the sacraments of communion and baptism, and serve the church and community. More specifically, I preach weekly at the contemporary service, provide care to church members through hospital visits, teach Bible studies throughout the year, and oversee the discipleship ministries of the church including children, youth, and adult education.”

Greg became the first in his family to graduate with a bachelor’s degree in 2015.  He comes from a long line of manual laborers and people who did not pursue furthering their education, although some started. He also continued to pursue a higher education, which was necessary to become a pastor in the United Methodist Church, graduating in 2019 with two master’s degrees. This year, he took the leap to go the full distance and seek the highest academic achievement he can by getting accepted to pursue a doctorate at Baylor University.

“Since coming to Texarkana a year ago, I have been immersed in learning about the community and its needs through the Leadership Texarkana program. I have enjoyed volunteering and helping at the Randy Sams’ Outreach Shelter, Mission Texarkana, the Salvation Army, and the food pantry ministry at Williams Memorial,” he explains.  “I have especially had a passion for helping and supporting Runnin’ WJ Ranch through my prayers, my presence, my gifts, and my service, including participation in their Night to Shine and rodeo events.”

In the future, Greg hopes to transition from associate pastor to become the senior pastor of a congregation. Although he is not 100% sure where God will lead him, he thinks the possibilities are endless.  He concludes, “I could still be serving as an associate pastor in Texarkana 10 years from now, and if so, praise God for it! On the other hand, I could be in Galveston leading a church with multiple campuses, and if so, praise God for it! Wherever I may be, my prayer will always remain that my ministry brings glory and honor to the Name above every other name.”

We keep that goal in mind during everything we do.”

Since the COVID-19 pandemic began, the Chamber has adapted its outreach methods by utilizing Facebook and Zoom to reach Texarkana residents.  Natalie has been an integral part of the “We’re Open” campaign where the Chamber delivered “We’re Open” signs to businesses after the shelter-in-place was lifted.  Over 66 businesses participated in the campaign, and the largest Facebook post reached over 17,000 people.  “We’re also planning an event for September 15-16 called Engaging Texarkana.  We’re going to deliver a keynote speaker and breakout sessions virtually to our business community,” she explains.

Natalie’s entire focus at the Chamber is about community. She has quickly realized how much gratification she receives when connecting people in need. “Whether it’s a senior calling our office who needs a ride to a doctor’s appointment or a business needing exposure … I’m happy to help!” she acknowledges.

Married to Josh, Natalie admits that her greatest personal accomplishment to-date is keeping their kids, Charlie and Jimmie, alive and well. “That’s where the real work is put in!” Natalie admits.  “Charlie is an adventurous 3-year-old boy that loves everything motorcycle-, bicycle-, and monster truck-related. We’re predicting he’ll be a BMX rider one day! Jimmie (4 months old), is showing her little personality more each day. She is named after my dad, and supposedly (according to the Census) is the only female named Jimmie since the ’70s!”

For fun, Natalie enjoys going to the river and hanging out with her “Tuesday Night” group of friends (12 adults and 10 children) who go out to eat together every Tuesday evening when there isn’t a global pandemic going on.  Where does Natalie see herself in 10 years?  She wants to continue being a leader in the Texarkana community.  “I love this great city and want to see it grow to its utmost potential!”

One Love Yoga Texarkana’s owner, Lauren Booker, knows that yoga is a wonderful tool for the mind, body, and spirit.  Also an instructor at her yoga studio, she enjoys teaching because it is her passion.  “My greatest professional accomplishment is being accepted into a 500-hour certification,” she says.  “This is one of the highest levels of being a yoga instructor.”

Since crimes against women and children are on the rise daily, Lauren wanted a way to bring attention to the human trafficking epidemic, so she started a nonprofit organization, Texarkana Against Trafficking.  Members of the group place informational posters inside public restrooms, providing outreach numbers for anyone in distress.    In addition, the organization helps with tattoo removal for women who have been trafficked (a commonplace tactic that traffickers use to identify their victims).  “The more we bring attention to the human trafficking epidemic, the faster we can put an end to this practice,” Lauren admits.

Other than spending time with her husband, Dr. Jim Booker, and daughter, Ashlyn Sander, Lauren enjoys being a member of several local nonprofit organizations, including the Noon Day Lions Club, Friends for a Cause, CASA, and Arkansas Children’s Hospital.  She also helps provide a scholarship for Texarkana College and serves as a Texarkana Chamber of Commerce ambassador.

Alissa Flanagan

age: 28 | Training Specialist | Farmers Bank & Trust

Amanda Ables.JPG

What Alissa Flanagan thought would be a part-time temporary job for her through college has quickly turned into a lifetime banking career. During the last 10 years, she has worked as a part-time teller, member service representative, consumer loan officer, and a few roles in-between. In October 2017, Alissa was offered and accepted a training position at Farmers. She explains, “By June of 2018, I finally started to find my purpose with the Bank. I noticed a need with our teller training program and with help from a few coworkers, I created our Teller Mentor Program, which has now expanded to our Call Center and iTeller departments with plans to expand it to our Retail Banking department this year.”

After a little over a year of assignments, two training courses and a test, Alissa became a Certified Bank Training Professional during May of 2019. “Since then, I planned the Bank’s first ever Bank Wide Training Day and started a Learning to Lead Management Training Series,” she continues.  “I only hope that I can continue to learn and grow and help my coworkers find their potential through learning and development.”

Overcoming a terrible four-wheeler accident at 14 years old is Alissa’s greatest personal accomplishment. After weeks in the hospital and seven surgeries on her right lower leg, she was afraid that she would lose the ability to continue cheerleading and be an active teenager. Thanks in part to a great physical therapist who helped her gain strength in her leg, she was able to continue the activities she loved. “I think that moment is where I learned that I could do anything I set my mind to,” she admits.

As an active member of the Junior League of Texarkana, Alissa serves the women and children of the Texarkana community through various projects. She has also volunteered for other local organizations such as Komen Texarkana, United Way of Greater Texarkana, and Harvest Regional Food Bank.

A girly-girl, Alissa enjoys typical stuff such as shopping and spa days.  She also enjoys spending time with a girlfriend, relaxing with family, and being with her husband, Hunter, and their dogs, “Oakley” and “Roxy.”  They are expecting a baby boy in January and look forward to being parents.

Juan Bustamante came to the U.S.A. to pursue the American dream.  Through making sacrifices, taking risks, and working hard,  he has attained his own version of success with endless possibilities in his future.

The first one in his family to achieve not one, but two bachelor’s degrees, Juan has plans to pursue a master’s degree and possibly even a doctorate.  After attaining his first degree in management at Texas A&M University-Texarkana, Juan became the general manager at Fuzzy’s Taco Shop.  “It wasn’t just a job for me; it was a second home,” he acknowledges.  “The employees, guests, and my wonderful bosses were all family to me.  To this day, they still are.”  With the support of his former bosses, Tommy and Jana Hicks, Juan went back to college in the spring of 2017 to pursue an accounting degree.  He recently was hired as a manager for Mayo Manufacturing and is ready for the challenge.  “I will learn new things.  I will meet great people.  And I will make new friends and hopefully, find a second home there as well,” he explains.

Juan is proud to serve as a role model for his wife, Juana Guillermina, and daughter, Maddison Grace.  During 2015, the Fuzzy’s corporation recognized him with a Best Manager award.  Out of 100 other managers, Juan was thrilled to be chosen for the honor.  “My crew and I built one of the best small restaurants in town, and that is an awesome accomplishment to me,” he relays.

Juan’s greatest passion is cooking.  Whether stressed, bored, or tired, cooking is the solution to all of his problems.  He hopes to eventually open a small taco truck, and if everything goes as planned, he will eventually move the business into a building to better serve the Texarkana community.

Juan Bustamante is the perfect example of one who has defied all odds and worked hard to attain his goals.  In addition to working in management, he is also the owner of a grapevine wreath business. He looks forward to the future with fervor, and encourages other immigrants and students to never give up on their dreams and to continue pursuing and accomplishing their goals.

Best piece of advice:

“Anybody can work at 100%, but what makes you different from others is that you always have to do at least 110%.” – Tommy Hicks, Juan’s former boss

Rebekah Drennon

age: 23 | Development Director | Opportunities, Inc.

Rebekah Drennon’s family instilled in her the value of community service and the importance of nonprofit sectors, which are driving forces that guide her career path. “My parents have always taught me that even if you end up with your dream job, and no matter the positions you hold in the community, it means nothing without your faith in God,” she admits.

Rebekah will graduate with a master’s degree in Communication from TAMUT this December, so that serves as her greatest personal achievement. Professionally, serving an internship with the Cowboys is her greatest accomplishment. She explains, “What started off as a summer internship turned into two years of working game days with the team. I don’t know what this season holds, but the opportunity opened so many doors and friendships, and helped me tap into what I’m truly passionate about.”

Community service is a very important part of Rebekah’s life.  She serves as a board member for the Greater Texarkana Young Professionals, and serves as a member of the Kiwanis Club, First Baptist Church Texarkana, Leadership Texarkana Class of 2020, and the TAMUT Alumni Association.

Aside from her current role as Development Director for Opportunities, Rebekah also works for the Dallas Cowboys on game days as part of the Event Presentation Staff. “In 10 years, in some form or fashion, I hope my career combines my love of sports with my passion for community. It would be amazing to work for a professional team as a community relations officer,” she explains.  “Managing a team’s outreach in their local community where there is a need for positive impact would be such a cool job because not only are the players/the team put in a good light, but there is potential to make such an incredible impact that stems outside of just wins or losses.”

Best piece of advice:

“Everyone starts somewhere. When someone asks you to sweep the floor, make sure it’s spotless, then go back and do it again. Hard work is what gets you noticed.” – Joe Drennon, Rebekah’s father

As the Director of TRIO Student Support Services at TAMUT, Brittany Barnett oversees all operations of the federal program and provides leadership to staff and participants.  She loves helping students achieve academic and personal success.  “I absolutely love working with TRIO!  Coming from a low-income background, I am able to relate to our special population of students who are low-income, first-generation, and have documented disabilities,” she explains.  “Being able to provide essential resources for  students throughout their undergraduate journey and seeing their dreams come true of accomplishing a college degree is all the satisfaction I need to know that I am in the right place at the right time.”

Being selected as Mrs. Arkansas Plus America 2020-2021 was a highlight for Brittany.  She looks forward to representing Arkansas in the national Miss Plus America Pageant which will be held during March 2021 in Louisville, Kentucky.

As a proud member of the Kappa Xi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated, Brittany and her sorority sisters provide “service to all mankind” through the high school mentoring program, assisting students with the college admission process and financial education, supporting Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), financial and economic literacy, voter registration, women’s healthcare and wellness initiatives, arts and cultural enrichment activities, and global impact (donating shoes, eyeglasses, masks, and cleaning supplies). “Through my platform as Mrs. Arkansas Plus America 2020-2021, ‘Financial Literacy For the Culture,’ I provide financial resources and education to high school and college students to assist them through their undergraduate financial journey,” Brittany affirms.

Brittany enjoys spending time with her husband, Freddie, and looks forward to fun times in their future.  In 10 years, she sees herself as an Executive Director of Federal TRIO Programs, owner of a dance studio, state director of Arkansas for the Miss Plus America Pageant, supporting her family to the best of her ability, and enjoying the wonderful life that God has given her.

As the General Manager of Silver Star Smokehouse in Texarkana, Donnie Spriggs handles the social media marketing for several other locations including Silver Star Smokehouse Bossier City, Silver Star Express, Silver Star Cantina Silver Star Grille, Silver Star Event Center, and The Stage Bossier.  “The best part about my job is the people I get to interact with on a daily basis, from those who eat with me regularly to those who are stopping in on their way to their next destination,” Donnie says.  “Seeing smiling and happy faces walk in and walk out of our doors makes each day feel like we are doing the best we can.”

Donnie’s greatest personal accomplishment is being able to help those in need in the Texarkana community.  Involved with multiple nonprofit groups, he serves on numerous boards and fundraising committees.  The two organizations that are near and dear to his heart are Friends for a Cause and the Randy Sams’ Outreach Shelter.  He explains, “Being able to give time and effort into these two groups is not always easy but you have to make time to help others because you never know when the tables could turn, and you could be the one looking for help.”

In the future, Donnie plans to work for either the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or the Texas Children’s Hospital in the marketing department or a similar position. He knows that working for either of those hospitals will give him the greatest satisfaction knowing that he will be fighting for those who sometimes cannot fight for themselves.

Best piece of advice:

“You can’t control life because it doesn’t work that way. But what you can control are your actions when life has its ups and downs.” – Amanda Stegall, Donnie’s best friend
